                Study in Black and White

                Picture
Study in Black and White explores historical U.S. institutions that served to construct and sustain racial disparity in socioeconomic conditions that continue to plague the country today.

Tallies/ratios using nearly 1200 ceramic beads compare the experience of people, both black and white, in relation to lynching, social security and unemployment benefits, military service, and the acquisition of entitlements such as the GI Bill and FHA loans.

The work has a participatory aspect; visitors are invited to answer the questions posed on the “question boxes,” (e.g., “What does white supremacy mean and how is it different from white privelege?") and thereby to contribute to the finished piece.
